Former Deluxe, Technicolor and Sundog Media Toolkit exec Richard Welsh has joined Molinare Creative Group in the new role of chief innovation officer.

Welsh, who is also president of SMPTE, will work across the company’s five specialist businesses to identify where emerging technology can “make a meaningful difference” to creative and production workflows, the client experience and how the Group operates.

His remit will span AI and automation alongside the development of new technology-led products, services and ways of working.

Welsh began his career at Dolby, working across film sound and digital cinema, before taking on a senior role at Technicolor. In 2013, he founded Sundog Media Toolkit, where he developed cloud-based automated mastering technology for film and television. Following its acquisition by Deluxe, he went on to serve as SVP of innovation at Deluxe.

Speaking about Welsh’s appointment, Nigel Bennett, CEO of Molinare Creative Group, said: “Richard is a significant appointment for Molinare Creative Group. He understands this industry, but also has a track record of looking ahead to where technology is taking it.

“This isn’t about technology for technology’s sake. It’s about making the experience of working with us better, giving our teams better tools and building services that respond to where our clients and the industry are heading.”

Welsh added: “I’ve spent much of my career working through major technology shifts in our industry, from digital cinema to cloud production, and AI has the potential to be the most significant change our industry has ever seen.

“What excites me about joining Molinare Creative Group is the opportunity to build on such a strong technical and creative foundation. I’m looking forward to working across the Group to explore how new technologies can solve real challenges, improve workflows and give our teams the tools and freedom to focus on creative work,” he added.

“I believe innovation is much broader than AI, of course. The goal is to harness technology to deliver practical improvements today, while developing the products, services and workflows our clients will need tomorrow.”
