Sony Debuts RIALTO 65 Camera Extension System
Extending the VENICE 2 CineAlta camera, RIALTO 65 has an imaging area around 2.2 times larger than that of a 35mm full-frame image sensor
Sony has launched the RIALTO 65 Camera Extension system, expanding its VENICE 2 CineAlta camera to the 65mm format.
Incorporating a 53.75mm wide by 35.83mm high sensor with a diagonal of approximately 64.60mm, RIALTO 65 has an imaging area around 2.2 times larger than that of a 35mm full-frame image sensor.
Aiming to accommodate shooting in difficult situations such as confined spaces, RIALTO 65 supports Extension Mode, with the camera head separated from the VENICE 2 body, and Studio Mode, in which the head is directly attached, said Sony. Additionally, the solution allows operators to access the color science developed for VENICE 2, including internal recording in 16-bit X-OCN, established operability, and existing workflows.
Measuring approximately 115mm x 154mm x 63mm, RIALTO 65 weighs around 1.5kg. The system supports 9.6K 1.5:1 Open Gate readout and a 9.6K 2.20:1 readout mode with a diagonal of approximately 59.04 mm, which accommodates a wider range of lenses. Additional readout modes will be introduced through future software updates to the VENICE 2, added the company.
A base ISO of 2,500 or 10,000 can be selected, according to creative intent and shooting environment. RIALTO 65 delivers 15+ stops of latitude at Base ISO 2,500. Reproducing rich gradation from highlights to shadows in high contrast scenes and under a wide range of lighting conditions, the system aims to enable image creation in line with cinematographic intent.
Designed to provide flexibility in positions that have typically been restricted with conventional 65mm systems, the cable connecting the camera head and VENICE 2 body aims to enhance ease of handling on set and is detachable at both ends. The system supports 4.5m and 12m cable options. Camera tilt and toll information can be recorded as metadata for use in post production workflows.
Operators can use VENICE 2 AXS memory cards for a smooth transition to 65mm shooting while using existing operability, recording media assets, peripherals, and production workflows.

With no lens mount included, RIALTO 65 is designed to accept third-party lens-mount adapters to meet production requirements. When using compatible lenses and mount adapters, information such as focal length, focus position and aperture value can be recorded as metadata.
When using anamorphic lenses, users can use de-squeezed display at multiple magnification ratios and the Zoom to Fit function to confirm the field of view and composition according to the lens being used, said the company. The system also includes 11 types of drop-in ND filters equipped with electronic contacts. VENICE 2 automatically recognizes the density information of an ND filter inserted into RIALTO 65, added Sony.
