InterDigital Inc. and Parks Associates have published a report into the adoption of HDR across the video ecosystem.

The white paper, High Dynamic Range and the Future of Video, explores the continuing evolution of HDR across televisions, streaming services, live production, mobile devices and more, alongside the technologies facilitating its growth. Expanding brightness, contrast and colour to produce images resembling what is seen by human vision, the technology’s adoption is accelerating.

Wider technological advances such as AI-assisted video enhancement, cloud production and next-generation codecs are lowering barriers to its broader deployment, said the report. Now commonplace across on-demand streaming services, HDR has been extended across major international live sporting events including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The report’s findings indicate HDR is positioned to become a capability that audiences will expect, across television, live events, movies and more.

Lionel Oisel, head of video labs at InterDigital, said, “Consumers may not always know HDR by name, but they recognise the experience it enables: richer colour, deeper contrast and a more lifelike picture. As HDR expands across streaming, live sports, gaming and mobile, the opportunity is to make that premium experience consistent and efficient on every screen. Innovation in HDR, video compression and delivery will be fundamental to making that possible.”

“HDR technology support has advanced faster than consumer understanding,” said report author Michael Goodman, director, entertainment research at Parks Associates. “HDR is increasingly becoming an expected part of a high-quality viewing experience, and the industry is working to improve interoperability, reduce production complexity and communicate HDR’s value to consumers.”
