Blackmagic Design has introduced the UltraStudio Express HD high speed capture and playback solution.

Designed to work with Mac, Windows and Linux computers with USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 connections, the solution features both analogue and digital connections, enabling archiving from old broadcasting decks and editing with DaVinci Resolve. UltraStudio Express HD captures and plays back to 3G-SDI in all SD and HD video standards up to 1080p60, said the company, in addition to featuring analogue video and audio inputs, HDMI output for monitoring and dual SDI outputs enabling fill and key playback.

Fast USB4 with video capture and playback is powered over a single USB cable, enabling location use and providing fast data speed with sufficient bandwidth to handle high resolutions, deeper bit depths and advanced frame buffer formats such as 4:2:2 and 4:4:4.

The solution enables live streaming using software such as Open Broadcaster, alternatively archiving from old broadcast decks into edit software or the included Media Express software. Playback via 3G-SDI enables use with DaVinci Resolve for broadcast editing and colour correction.

Operators are able to use the included Blackmagic Media Express software to capture and playback video into files that can be loaded into Fusion, After Effects or Photoshop.

UltraStudio Express HD includes 3G-SDI in and out, HDMI out for monitoring on TVs and projectors and analogue YUV/NTSC/PAL video and balanced analogue input for archiving from legacy analogue broadcast tape decks. Dual SDI outputs can switch to fill and key. Working in SD, the solution supports 525i59.94 and 625i50 standards. In HD, support is provided for 720p, 1080i and 1080p standards, up to 1080p60. For working with 3G-SDI sources, users can switch between level A and level B. UltraStudio Express HD also includes video reference for sync playback to broadcast systems, plus RS-422 remote, said the company.

Front panel controls and LCD monitoring can be enabled with the optional Teranex Mini Smart Panel, with push button controls allowing operators to preview video, see meters, timecode, format information and more.

Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design, commented, “We know how important the previous UltraStudio HD Mini model has been for our customers, so we’re excited we’ve been able to rebuild it around USB4 with every broadcast connection customers need. That means they can keep working with the decks, switchers and monitors they’ve always had, while plugging into the computers they’re buying today or in the future. Plus, it all runs from a laptop battery, so customers can work anywhere!”
