WRNN Taps Tut For Video Trunking

(January 27, 2004) Lake Oswego, OR--WRNN-TV is using Tut Systems' M2-400 video trunking system to encode and distribute video broadcast footage between its studio and broadcast TV facilities. WRNN, an independent regional television station and news network, covers about 120 miles of geographic distance within its DMA and has five studios. It will use the M2-400 for newsgathering and distribution of video content over its newly deployed broadband fiber network.
The distributed nature of WRNN’s studios required a flexible video trunking solution capable of delivering MPEG-2 4:2:2 broadcast video between multiple locations. At the same time, it required the capability to utilize MPEG-2 4:2:0 in a low-latency mode for real-time interview capabilities between the studio anchors and reporters in the field. The M2-400 provides an integrated, scalable design, and the processing power to ensure low latency and fully synchronized audio/video channels over IP networks. In addition, the M2-400 eliminates the jitter and delay often associated with IP delivery platforms and provides viewers with the picture resolution and performance they have come to expect with digital TV.
"WRNN is moving toward operating in an all-IP world and Tut Systems’ M2 family of products provide the performance that’s required by broadcasters seeking cutting-edge contribution and distribution capabilities," said Christian French, vice president at WRNN. "Utilizing IP to link our studios and deliver broadcast content in realtime or on demand provides us a more manageable, cost-effective, and efficient platform for delivering content between our facilities. We evaluated a number of vendors and found that Tut Systems offered the best overall solution in terms of technology, product, price, and most importantly service and support."
"We believe that the broadcasting industry is beginning to realize the flexibility that IP networks provide when compared to traditional analog or digital microwave transmission," said Keith Wymbs, Video Trunking market director for Tut Systems. "WRNN-TV is implementing an IP-based solution that will have significant impact on every point of the network, from the studio and production facilities all the way to the consumer’s living room. We are pleased to partner with WRNN on their migration to a new generation broadcast video network."
