A study commissioned by QuickPlay Media indicates that more than half of the group polled were interested in mobile television.
QuickPlay released the results of the Market Tools survey on March 10 and said that it was based on responses from some 1,000 mobile subscribers in the 18 to 35 year-old age bracket. This is the second time that QuickPlay has done a market study in this area of the industry.
The new report showed that 78 percent of present mobile video services users expect to increase their viewing during the next year. It revealed that 38 percent of the respondents said that if they were considering a change in wireless service providers, that provider’s ability to provide a multimedia-enabled smart phone/PDA would be a factor in their selection. It also indicated that 51 percent of those polled said they would accept advertising if video content would be provided on a free basis.
"These results corroborate other recent research from IDC and Nielsen, both of which provide strong indication that the mobile TV and video industry is gaining momentum," said Wayne Purboo, president and CEO, QuickPlay Media. "Looking ahead, we expect to see wireless carriers continue on this path as they work to grow adoption and the associated revenues of mobile entertainment services."
Another finding of the study was that 30 percent of users are using their mobile devices to view video offerings while they are at home. This is a 19 percent increase from 2008. Also, 21 percent of those polled said that they were using mobile TV and video services more than once a week.
