L-3 Communications launches CEA 80 Broadcast Amplifier

L-3 Communications Electron Devices announced that its Constant Efficiency Amplifier (CEA 80) is ready for analog service and immediate shipment. The new CEA 80 is based on the technology developed for L-3’s CEA 130, which is currently deployed in nine digital transmitters in the U.S.

The CEA 80 demonstrates efficiency improvements of as much as 50 percent over standard Inductive Output Tube (IOT) technology in NTSC service. This, the company said, translates to a $17,000 per year, per tube savings in electricity costs. In both NTSC analog service and 8-VSB digital service, the CEA technology is said to offer considerable energy savings over the life of a transmitter.

An additional benefit of the CEA 80, said L-3, is that the tube can continue to be used when the transmitter is upgraded to digital service in the future.

L-3 Communications Electron Devices has been designing and manufacturing microwave vacuum tube devices for over 50 years.
