KOKI upgrades look of on-air maps, improves visual consistency

Creating high-impact maps to illustrate breaking local and national news stories used to be a time-consuming process for Tulsa, OK, broadcaster KOKI FOX23.

With Curious Software's Curious Maps station engineers at KOKI FOX23 can change the style of their on-air maps instantly, without having to redraw them.

But thanks to a recent investment in some specialized map software, the station’s graphic designers now have maps at their fingertips.

Before it acquired Curious Software’s Curious World Maps, the broadcaster relied on stills created with Adobe Illustrator templates. According to KOKI FOX23 and KTFO UPN41 art director and animator Joel Rorabaugh, that approach had some serious drawbacks. Using Illustrator templates was time-consuming and made it hard for Rorabaugh to create high-quality maps that were visually consistent from street level to state and national levels.

“Curious Maps has given us the ability to create highly attractive animated maps with minimal effort,” explained Rorabaugh. “Although we are still learning how to take full advantage of the software’s capabilities, we have successfully finalized a consistent style throughout a variety of templates for our maps and we are truly delighted with the results.”
