ABC to Air Dozen World Cup Matches in HD

ABC Television said it plans to televise all 64 scheduled World Cup matches -- including 12 in HD -- from a dozen stadium sites throughout Germany. The 720p feeds will include the first-round contest of the U.S. vs. Italy on June 17, and the final match on July 9.

The AP reports that all of the Disney network's broadcasts from Germany will be on Saturdays and Sundays, although because of the time difference, none will be in primetime. Disney's ESPN on cable will broadcast 21 games, while ESPN2 will televise 31 matches of the world's most widely televised sports event, which starts on June 9.

Because of the six-hour time difference between Germany and DST on the U.S. East Coast, games will begin at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. All HD and SD broadcasts will be live. Univision has the U.S. Spanish-language broadcast rights.
