Streambox encodes Hong Kong’s NOW business news

Streambox, a supplier of real-time video encoding technology, announced that PCCW’s NOW Business News Channel (NOW BNC), a major financial news provider in Hong Kong, had deployed several of its portable video transport systems for IPTV-based field production and transmission. Streambox said its ACT-L3 video transport made it easy for NOW BNC’s staff to leverage Hong Kong’s readily available Internet connectivity to transmit and deliver breaking news for editing and broadcasting in real time.

The company said the system provided “amazing pictures in full D1 quality” while running on a 1.5Mb/s connection. The transport is used to deliver real-time video feeds over low-data-rate networks directly to the newsroom for live broadcast.

NOW BNC operates the systems on a standard PC notebook or MacBook Pro in a plug-and-play solution that lets journalists gather, edit and transmit live video from the field. Setup, the company said, is virtually nonexistent; the system simply connects then transmits video on demand.

Streambox said the system’s WiFi capability provided NOW BNC’s field staff with a competitive advantage, because it enabled them to broadcast live from any wireless access point.
