New CEA Flyers Warn of Set Stability Hazards

There are various hazards associated with TV, and the Consumer Electronics Association is taking the initiative on one issue that media watchdogs may have overlooked—the danger that the set itself could fall on and injure people, especially children.

CEA’s Product Safety Working Group (PSWG) has released new and revised educational flyers on TV set stability—one flyer for flat panel displays and one for CRTs.

CEA is encouraging manufacturers and retailers to use the flyers to help educate consumers.

“The consumer electronics industry is committed to providing safe and enjoyable entertainment,” said Jeff Howell, PSWG chair and manager for regulatory compliance at Toshiba America Consumer Products. “The flyers are one way that the industry provides information to consumers on how to use our products while avoiding unnecessary injury.”

“This voluntary industry effort demonstrates our commitment to consumer safety,” said Michael Petricone, CEA senior vice president of government affairs. “These educational materials give consumers the information they need to properly install their televisions.”

The Product Safety Working Group, the newest working group of the CEA Government Affairs Council (GAC), develops CE-industry positions related to product safety that will be presented as needed to appropriate government bodies and standards developers. The PSWG provides input on safety standards that are likely to be implemented in a variety of countries, including the U.S.
