Thomson Grass Valley Wireless Camera System Used for Award Ceremony

The Grass Valley digital "wireless triax" camera system from Thomson Broadcast was recently used for the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA) awards dinner in Washington, D.C. The system, which uses multiple antennas at both ends to prevent signal loss, was used in a large ballroom to capture events that were then recorded and displayed live to the 1,000 attendees.

The Grass Valley digital wireless triax system features a range of 500 feet, and provides two-way signals that allow control over the camera even as it delivers the digital video processed with wavelet compression. Two antennas are used on the camera module and three are used at the wireless base station, which then connects to the camera control unit with triax cable.

At the awards dinner, the WHNPA honored still and video photographers for their contribution to the news industry in 2003. Lance Ing, a news videographer for WTTG-TV in Washington, D.C., was named video photographer of the year by the WHNPA, which cited several of Ing's news and feature shoots as examples of excellence in news videography.
