The Big Blackout
By TVTechnology published
TV Technology has a new story on the Northeast power blackout. See "New York-Area Broadcasters Keep the Power On".
For the most part, broadcast operations continued using facilities operating on emergency generators. Other factors outside the broadcast plant probably had a greater impact -- traffic jams, jammed cellphone sites, gas stations unable to pump fuel and loss of other services we've come to depend on. I have no doubt most stations will be modifying emergency plans to work around these factors, to the extent possible.
NASA has some interesting pictures showing the amount of light from Northeast cities the night before and the night of the blackout. Take a look at these before and after photos.
