Avid Technology returned to the NAB Show this week after a one year absence (and following a major reorganization) to intro its latest technology for helping stations go HD for their local news. While it’s believed that a few hundred stations have made the local switch, a majority of stations have yet to make the local leap.
Avid demoed its new AirSpeed Multi Stream production server, which provides native support for Sony’s XDCam HD system. The scheme is a time saver, says Avid, because it allows users to edit directly onto the disk without the need to move XDCam footage to the Avid NewsCutter system.
Avid recently underwent what it called “the most significant reorganization in our history.” Last year, they skipped NAB altogether. This year they can be found in Booths SU902, S232LMR, S233LMR, SU902, S217LMR, through Thursday afternoon, April 23.
Its compact AirSpeed production server was specifically designed for HD, although it is not intended to be exclusively for Sony products, per se, and Avid said it will grow its compatibility into other companies’ product lines in the near future.
Also with local HD conversion in mind, Avid has upgraded its NewsCutter 7.5 editing system, its iNews Instinct 2.0 editing and scripting software, and its iNews Command 2.0 automation and control system.
