Motorola keen on Multimedia Home Platform

Motorola’s Broadband Communications Sector has acquired the technology assets of Cadence Design Systems to implement the DVB Multimedia Home Platform (MHP). The acquisition allows Motorola to add MHP capabilities to its DVi and DTH (direct-to-home) product lines of interactive digital set-tops.

MHP —popular in Europe — is an enabling platform for interactive television services over cable, satellite and terrestrial broadcasts. The acquisition will aid Motorola most in the European and Asian markets.

The MHP software, based on Java technology, will be incorporated into the DVi and DTH set-tops, starting with the DVi3000 in the third quarter of 2003. By early 2004, the software will reside as a standard capability in all DVB-based DVi set-tops.
