LCD TV panels lead growth in July shipments

Shipments of LCD TV panels in July grew 69 percent year over year — the highest Y/Y level ever achieved, according to the latest figures for display market research firm DisplaySearch.

According to the most recent edition of the company’s “Monthly TFT LCD Shipment Database,” shipments of all large-area TFT LCD panels reached 49.2 million units, up 5 percent month over month and 39 percent Y/Y — a new record for monthly large-area TFT LCD shipments. DisplaySearch includes notebook PC, LCD TV and mininote panels and other displays in its large-area TFT LCD panel category.

The record-breaking shipments for the month indicate “strong recovery in end-market demand and increased utilization at panel makers,” said DisplaySearch VP David Hsieh.

Other findings include:

  • LCD shipments for TV applications in July reached 13.5 million units.
  • Large-area TFT LCD revenues reached $5.9 billion, up 11 percent M/M and 6 percent Y/Y, marking the first time in the past 12 months that there has been positive Y/Y growth.
  • On a unit basis, LG Display was the leader with 24.7 percent market share, followed by Samsung with 23.4 percent and AUO with 16.8 percent. Samsung led in area shipments with 26.8 percent market share, followed by LG Display at 25.1 percent, CMO at 15.7 percent and AUO with 15.6 percent.

Revenue from the sale of panels will continue to rise in August with continued growth in shipments as OEMs and brands increase inventories to prepare for the holiday season, Hsieh said.
