Gefen Launches HD Video, Touch Screen Extender

Getting HD from here to there without noticeable degradation is not as simple as it may appear to non-engineers. The ex-tend-it DVI/RS-232 Extender from Gefen can now provide a plug-and-play method of sending HD video up to 150 feet over CAT-5 cables. Equipped with both DVI and RS-232 ports, the new extender supports both HD video displays and touch screen applications, and enables local remote control. (When used with a Gefen DVI-to-HDMI Adapter, HDMI displays may be used as well.)

The extender can be for used for a variety of applications--ranging from all-digital signage to remote computer operation to touch-screen controls for home automation. Multiple HD resolutions up to 1080p, or 1920x1200, can be consistently maintained through all extension phases, according to Gefen.

The DVI/RS-232 allows users to extend HD video beyond its typically specified 5-meter limit. Use of industry-standard CAT-5 cables is geared to cutting costs and streamlining installation. Integration is accomplished by connecting the sender unit to the video source and the receiver unit to the extended display. Two CAT-5 cables, available in several lengths, connect local and remote components.

The unit comes with a 5-volt power supply, which can be connected at either the local or remote site.
