Due date extended for RFP on DTV-to-NTSC converter box

The due date for design proposals for the NAB and MSTV’s DTV converter box has been extended to July 29. A high quality, the broadcast trade groups proposed low cost box June 15 after conversion became a congressional issue in the debate over new policies in the DTV transition.

The broadcasters contend the converter boxes must be consumer friendly and work well. Several manufacturers have shown prototype converters with costs estimated to be as low as $30.

The Consumer Electronics Association found the broadcaster’s efforts to design an alternative box laughable.

Proposals are due by the close of business July 29. Those interested in receiving the request for quote information should send e-mail to Victor Tawil at vtawil@mstv.org or call 202-966-1956.
