Nagravision and Gemalto announced last month that tests held in November 2007 demonstrated a fully operational, end-to-end OMA BCAST Smartcard Profile 1.0 solution for mobile TV services.
At the OMA TestFest 21, held in Bled, Slovenia, Nov. 9-16, 2007, the companies implemented integration and testing of a complete value-chain of products, from the headend to the consumer device, to demonstrate the interoperability between Nagravision headend equipment and Gemalto mobile TV cards. The companies verified that the integration was in full compliance with the OMA BCAST SCP 1.0 specifications, according to a press statement.
The OMA BCAST (Open Mobile Alliance Mobile Broadcast Services Enabler Suite) Smartcard Profile 1.0 was first made publicly available last June and was designed to be an open global standard for interactive mobile content delivery technology as well as on-demand video services. A SIM-based service-protection system, it is adaptable to any IP-based mobile content delivery technology. It was defined by OMA members, which include mobile operators, device and network suppliers and content providers.
As a result of the interoperability testing, Nagravision is now making its OMA BCAST Smartcard Profile headend platform available for shipment to clients. Gemalto has said it will make SCP cards compatible with the OMA BCAST specifications available early this year. The cards will be bundled with a maintenance service allowing USIM-based software to be updated at any time to maintain a constant high level of security and to implement new functionalities.
Nagravision and Gemalto will showcase the solution at the 2008 GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this month.
