Maxian, NDS introduce pay TV-friendly portable media player

NDS and Maxian at IBC2007 presented a pay TV-enabled Portable Media Player (PMP) based on NDS’s VideoGuard PMP technology, which allows consumers to legally copy content-protected TV episodes and movies directly from their set-top boxes to the PMP.

The companies are targeting the device, which integrates the VideoGuard PMP technology with Maxian’s PMPs, at pay TV operators looking to realize new revenue streams by extending their services beyond the living room experience. Potential business models include subscription, content rentals and purchase, with the ability for consumers to view premium movies, tag a favorite TV series or unwatched program and automatically transfer it to the PMP using the set-top box remote control via USB 2.0 link or direct downloading via WiFi connectivity.

The VideoGuard PMP is based on the Secure Video Processor (SVP) specification and can work on multiple pay TV networks.
