Limelight and Widevine team for content security

Limelight Networks and Widevine Technologies have announced that the companies have integrated Widevine Cypher with Limelight Networks’ content delivery architecture. The alliance will enable media companies to securely deliver content to any platform, browser or operating system.

The new alliance enhances the value of Limelight’s network for Adobe Flash delivery and Widevine’s ability to provide a solution that supports Adobe Interactive Runtime (AIR) for downloads, Flash Media Server and other HTTP servers for progressive downloads.

Limelight customers will no longer have to deal with managing multiple DRM systems to support users with different video formats on different devices as Widevine is compatible with all browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari as well as all operating systems, including Windows, Macintosh and Linux.

Secure Flash streams and HTTP downloads can be verified and tracked by Widevine’s DRM, thereby enabling advertisers to send more targeted ads to consumers along with verification that the content has been accessed and viewed. In addition, Widevine has amassed a significant intellectual property portfolio for video security on the Internet.

Widevine‘s integration with Limelight includes post-decryption digital copy protection to detect, monitor and respond to the hundreds of screen scraping and recording utilities available on the Internet. Many of these utilities can record and store a stream as a downloadable file that can easily be edited to strip out valuable online ad inventory and be uploaded onto a file-sharing network, depriving content owners of revenues.
