Comcast is now building a brand new production control room at its Los Angeles facility for its new video gaming channel, G4. The centerpiece of the new production space will be a Studer Vista 8 live production and broadcast console. The new 40-fader audio board will be used to handle a mixture of acquired material and both taped and live programming from the company’s in-house studios.
New Jersey-based Diversified Systems is handling system integration for the new A/V control room, which will be used eight to ten hours a day, five days a week, to create both live and taped shows. The facility’s existing control room boasts a Studer D950 digital production console.
The new all-digital production system comprises the Vista 8 control surface, DSP Core and D21m input/output rack, plus a monitoring frame and CPU. The Vista 8 can accommodate 32 analog microphone, 32 analog mic/line and 48 AES-format digital inputs, with routing to user-configurable analog and digital outputs.
Network staff will use the Vista 8’s built-in audio router to handle I/O selection. In addition to analog sources, the facility is equipped with Sony Digital Betacam, 360 Systems DigiCart replay systems and a disc-based server that replays audio and video sources.
The Vista 8’s integrated Vistonics user interface reduces the learning curve. Channel controls comprise a screen with integral rotary controls and buttons, plus a touch-screen area immediately below. Channel-specific controls — fader, mute and on/off buttons — are arranged above and below the TFT screen to form an instant overview.
