Thomson Grass Valley Kalypso switches Super Bowl world feed, halftime show

NBC televised Super Bowl XLIII, Feb. 1, from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL, in the 1080i HD for the NFL world feed using a Thomson Grass Valley Kalypso HD switcher onboard an all-HD NEP Supershooters production truck. NEP also provided a Kalypso-based truck to NBC for the production of the Super Bowl halftime show.

The Grass Valley HD switcher worked in tandem with other HD production equipment to handle more than 75 cameras that were used for game action and other activities.

Other TV networks, including ESPN and FOX Sports Net, used other production trucks based on the Grass Valley Kalypso HD switcher for their Super Bowl-related programming throughout the week leading up to the big game.

NEP Supershooters sent four HD trucks to handle live event coverage — two with Grass Valley Kalypso HD switchers onboard. The trucks included NEP’s ND4 with a 90-input Kalypso HD switcher used for the NFL world feed and NEP’s Denali Silver with a Grass Valley Kalypso HD switcher for the Super Bowl halftime show.
