The Systems Group upgrades two TV stations in Puerto Rico

WIPR-TV, one of two public broadcasting stations in Puerto Rico, is upgrading its broadcast and production facilities with The Systems Group (TSG).

The project will also include WIPR’s sister station WIPM-TV in Mayaguez. It will result in the construction of the first public broadcast station in Puerto Rico capable of producing and broadcasting HD programming. TSG is serving as a technical design and systems integration consultant on the project, guiding the station through the significant technological and logistical considerations required for a project of this magnitude.

The completed WIPR/WIPM project will consist of four studios, four production control rooms and two master control rooms. More than 15,000 square feet of technical space will be renovated over the course of the project. The facility will broadcast more than four channels including the main standard definition feed, a high-definition channel, and two channels that specialize in educational and government-related broadcasts.

In addition to converting to a serial digital platform, WIPR is replacing its existing analog videotape equipment with a highly automated server-based system, which will feature a newsroom non-linear editing system, multi-channel master control platform and a DVD based archive.
