News editing remains a challenge in new HD workflow at Columbus stations

In May 2008, WSYX-TV and WTTE-TV, the Sinclair Broadcasting Group stations in Columbus, OH, launched local HD news.

Back then, “HD Technology Update” spoke with Dan Carpenter, a regional broadcast engineer at Sinclair, about the transition. This week, Rick Ervin, the chief engineer for the stations, discusses some of the lessons learned in the past nine months about doing HD local newscasts.

One of those lessons is modifying the news workflow to accommodate SD news editing for integration into the local HD newscasts. Another centers on the varying degrees of quality of the HD material that the stations receive.

This week’s Sound Off is presented as a podcast.
