National Archives relies on Thomson, 1 Beyond for preservation effort

The National Archives in Washington, D.C., will soon receive five 1 Beyond HD OctoFlex ingest workstations with Thomson Grass Valley EDIUS HD craft editing software and encoding hardware from Thomson for the preservation of thousands of hours of historic film and video footage.

For this massive preservation effort, the National Archives has also purchased a Grass Valley Spirit4K Datacine and Bones data capture and image restoration software, which will be used in tandem to transfer film material to a digital file format for archiving. The Spirit is being provided and installed by Communications Engineering, a systems integrator in Newington, VA.

The National Archives has been tasked with preserving the images from its vast library of quickly deteriorating video media or risk loosing them forever. The agency often fulfills requests from different sectors of the government and news media to make copies of videos and, in some cases, to edit the images for special purposes.
