Gefen Discounts HD Cable Extensions

Gefen has discounted its price points on its HDTV Extreme Cables, which are available in 33, 50, 66, 75, 100, 135, 210 and 330-foot lengths. Gefen said the cables are uniquely suited for HD projection and computer video extensions because they combine fiber optics and copper wires in a single cable in which the electronics are part of the digital video interface (DVI) connectors.

Sending the high resolutions of HD video beyond about 15 feet from a computer or satellite set-top box to a display requires certain cabling and transmission techniques, according to Gefen. Also, off-the-shelf or improper configurations can result in pixilation deterioration that increases with the length of extensions (HD Notebook, April 6, 2005). Gefen said its Extreme Cables could extend HD video intact as far as 300 feet from the HD wellspring.

The company, based in Woodland Hills, Calif., will bring price points for its fiber DVI cables closer to those for copper DVI cables. Newer flat panel displays, including Apple's new Cinema Display, are equipped with DVI connectivity.
