Thomson highlights JPEG2000-based wireless HD camera system

Thomson showed its new Grass Valley HD Wireless Camera System earlier this month in Amsterdam at IBC2006.

The HD Wireless Camera System uses JPEG2000 compression, a wavelet-based algorithm that delivers excellent compression efficiency with the elimination of blocking artifacts when reception is difficult.

Given a bandwidth of 55Mb/s to 75Mb/s, high-quality HD images can be transferred using pure JPEG2000 with a latency of a single frame. A lower bit rate, highly robust transmission mode and booster for long-distance outdoor applications is also included.

The system's wireless link is based on the 802.16 standard, a subset of the commonly known WiMAX format. The system provides coverage up to 3280ft with an optional roaming unit.

Thomson is targeting the sports production market for the wireless camera system.
