The Chemical Brothers choose SSL AWS 900 console

The UK production duo known as The Chemical Brothers have chosen to upgrade to the Solid State Logic AWS 900 Analogue Workstation System for their private studio in Sussex, England. Designed by Recording Architecture, the studio contains a generous stock of vintage synthesizers and outboard equipment. Nick Clarke, of Tech Nick Clarke, installed the new console, which is proving to be a big hit with Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, who make up The Chemical Brothers, and engineer Steve Dubbs. Clarke also installed an integral patchbay and custom speaker stands to accommodate Rowlands’ nearfield monitors, which were too large to sit on top of the console.

Among the qualities contributing to the decision were the desk’s compact size and standard power consumption. In addition, the AWS 900+ provides the dual benefits of SSL’s fully featured SuperAnalogue signal path coupled with a comprehensive DAW controller. Other key product features include SSL’s SuperAnalogue mic preamps and signal processing; full monitoring up to 5.1-channel surround sound; direct control of DAW recording, editing and mixing functions; and flexible signal routing.

Additional product features include greater bandwidth than 192kHz recorders; twin curve SSL E and G Series 4-band parametric equalization; assignable SSL dynamics section with gate, expander and compressor/limiter; G Series Stereo main mix buss compressor; flexible processing order; balanced circuitry throughout; oxygen-free cable throughout; and metering on all channels and main outputs.
