Omneon unveils Media Application Server for centralized clip management

After developing new features and functionality for its Media Director modules, Omneon is now focusing on providing customers with a centralized way to manage those applications in a highly efficient way.

To this end, at IBC2009, the company launched a new Media Application Server that’s designed to allow third-party developers and customers — via a Web services, openly published API — to create new workflow tools for Omneon’s expanding Media Server platform. The server is an extension of the company’s existing Media Services Framework (MSF) initiative that it began two years ago, which now manages a number of applications into a single box.

Omneon also introduced a new suite of applications, initially developed for the MSF platform, that run on the Media Application Server, including Omneon ProXplore, a new clip and metadata management utility, and new versions of the Omneon ProBrowse proxy application and the Omneon ProXchange transcode application. This suite of applications provides simple clip processing and management tools via a common Web-based user interface that can be made available throughout any production facility.

Built on standard IT hardware, the Omneon Media Application Server is a software platform that offers improved performance and scalability by decoupling client computers and data storage operations from media management and application processing.

Within the IT industry, application servers have proven to offer improved efficiency through centralized administration and configuration, centralized security for controlled access to content, scalable performance, data integrity and a common messaging bus.

The Omneon MSF API is embedded within the Omneon Media Application Server and allows users to manage content and process media on Omneon systems. The Media Application Server is not limited to just Omneon services and provides an open platform that supports straightforward integration of third-party services for tasks such as archive management, QC, content repurposing, branding and graphics compositing.

Omneon is now making available a Media Application Server SDK, including API documentation and sample source code, free of charge to licensed application developers.
