RTW SurroundControl 31900 Earns STAR Award for Innovation at 2009 NAB Show

RTW’s SurroundControl 31900 line of sound monitoring and control devices earned a STAR Award (Superior Technology Award Recipient) from the editors and columnists of TV Technology magazine at this year’s National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas. Now in their 10th year, STAR Awards showcase the best technology innovations for the media industry.

The object of a thorough engineering overhaul in the last year, RTW’s SurroundControl 31900 controls and monitors eight-channel sound in professional production, post-production, and broadcast environments. At the heart of the 31900 is RTW’s unique Surround Sound Analyzer, the house-shaped display known throughout the industry as an ingeniously easy-to-read visual manifestation of overall sound, including loudness and sound pressure level, phase correlation, and level differences among channels.

“Unique among devices of its kind, the RTW 31900 combines control, analysis, and monitoring of surround sound into one single system,” said Andreas Tweitmann, managing director of RTW. “The STAR Award was given in recognition that no other product on the market incorporates so many functions.”

Designed for audio studios, the SurroundControl 31900 fits in a 19-inch, 1-RU case. A sister product, the SurroundControl 31960, is a half 19-inch, 3-RU rack-mountable module that fits into standard 19-inch installation racks for waveform monitors in video studios.

RTW’s SurroundControl 31900SD and 31960SD feature an HD- and SD-capable SDI de-embedder interface as well as analog and digital audio inputs and outputs. The new SDI interface can access all 16 (4 x 4) audio channels implemented in SDI streams and use them for both visual display and audio monitoring. Standard and SDI versions of SurroundControl are also available with a Dolby® E and Dolby AC-3 decoder option that eliminates any need for external decoding.

“Every year, the NAB show serves as the launching pad for thousands of new products and services for audio and video professionals,” said Tom Butts, TV Technology editor. “Our panel of editors walked the show floor in search of the most innovative technologies. The products and services that we selected for the STAR Award made the cut — they demonstrated their ability to help advance the acquisition and distribution of entertainment and information across the media spectrum.”
