LINEAR ACOUSTIC FOUNDER TIM CARROLL TO SHARE EXPERT PERSPECTIVE ON LOUDNESS CONTROL, LISTENER FATIGUE ISSUES ON TWO PANELS AT AES 2009

NEW YORK – Tim Carroll, president and founder of Linear Acoustic, the leading authority in loudness control and upmixing solutions for digital television, will share his industry expertise during two panels at AES 2009, October 9-12 in New York, NY. Carroll will address the audio issues facing broadcasters today in panels titled, “ Listener Fatigue and Longevity” and “ Loudness Processing and Broadcast.”

“It is an honor to be asked to return to participate in the AES Broadcast Sessions organized by David Bialik,” says Carroll. “With the recent transition to digital, digital television loudness and surround sound issues are more complex than ever – but the solutions don’t have to be. The ongoing dialogue about these issues that comes out of AES each year continues to drive innovation in the industry, convincing broadcasters that controlling broadcast audio is best accomplished at each stage of the broadcast chain.”

Respected as one of the foremost experts on broadcast audio, Carroll helped define and develop Dolby Digital (AC-3), Dolby E and Dolby Surround products while at Dolby Laboratories. He founded Linear Acoustic to provide innovative new industry solutions, and today the company’s AERO.air™, AERO.qc™, L.A.M.B.D.A™, UPMAX:neo™ and e2™ (e-squared) products have become standard in many of the top broadcast facilities. Carroll has also been recognized for his industry achievements with several awards, including two prestigious National Academy of Television Arts and Science Prime Time Emmy® awards.

At AES 2009, Carroll will first share his expert perspective on listener fatigue and its impact on listener retention in a Broadcast Session, “Listener Fatigue and Longevity,” scheduled for Sunday, October 11 at 11 a.m. Carroll and other panel members will discuss their experiences to date and corresponding research regarding the issue of listener fatigue. On a second panel, “Loudness and Audio Processing for Broadcast,” scheduled for Sunday, October 11 at 4 p.m., Carroll will discuss key audio control challenges faced by broadcasters, especially in relation to the recent nationwide switch to digital. As an active member of the audio engineering community and an AES, IEEE, SMPTE, SBE and ATSC member, Carroll will also share his insight into potential government mandated loudness control regulation, providing his take on strategies for improving audio control from Linear Acoustic customer case studies.
