TV Magic Leads Smooth Upgrade for TV Azteca Noreste, the First TV Azteca Station to Produce and Broadcast in HD

SAN DIEGO — Sept. 1, 2009 — Broadcast systems integrator TV Magic today announced that it has completed engineering, integration, and implementation of an HD upgrade for TV Azteca Noreste, the Monterrey-based broadcast facility for TV Azteca, one of the world's leading producers of Spanish-language television programming. The upgrade equips TV Azteca Noreste with state-of-the-art infrastructure, routing, and HD production equipment that support a reliable, flexible digital workflow in providing news and entertainment programming to northeastern Mexico. The installation also makes TV Azteca Noreste the first TV Azteca station to produce and broadcast in HD.

"While most broadcasters make a gradual migration from analog to digital and then to HD, we chose to make the transition from analog to HD all at once," said Roberto Aurioles, director of operations at TV Azteca. "TV Magic was a valuable partner in this landmark project, providing systems integration expertise and helping us to invest in solutions that met both our functional needs and our budget. To our knowledge, the resulting HD production, broadcast, and post-production systems are Mexico's most advanced outside of Mexico City."

In overhauling the TV Azteca Noreste facilities, TV Magic integrated Panasonic HD cameras into a new digital infrastructure along with a two-channel Chyron character generator, Miranda routing systems, and frame synchronizers and converters from AJA and Evertz. By replacing TV Azteca Noreste's manual routing model, the new Miranda systems not only enable handling of analog, SD-SDI, and HD-SDI signals, but also significantly improve the broadcaster's flexibility and efficiency in routing any source to any destination.

TV Magic helped the facility reduce power consumption through replacement of CRT monitors with two Harris plasma screens and a multiviewer, and further facilitated a green and cost-effective project by repurposing 90 percent of the broadcaster's existing equipment. Tested, installed, and commissioned by TV Magic, these systems together support a streamlined tapeless workflow in TV Azteca Noreste's delivery of network programming, as well as local newscasts targeted to cities across northeast Mexico.

"Our goal is to provide viewers with the best news and information programming, and the HD upgrade facilitated by TV Magic supports this goal, representing both a significant technical advancement and a powerful enhancement of our production and broadcast capabilities," added Aurioles. "TV Magic not only helped us to meet the demands of HD broadcasting, but also worked closely with us to address issues that have a dramatic impact on service quality. With the company's guidance, for example, we realigned our satellite up- and downlinks and reconfigured our satellite converters, in turn realizing a 50 percent improvement in the quality of audio and video signals. The improvements we've seen in both broadcast quality and workflow as a result of this project are simply remarkable."
