Omneon Unveils Media Services Framework to Streamline File-Based Workflows

Consolidated Service Oriented Architecture Promises Tighter Integration and Unified Content Management Across Multiple Systems

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- April 12, 2008 -- Omneon, Inc. today introduced the Media Services Framework (MSF), an integrated Web services platform that enables more efficient, best-of-breed file-based workflows by easing third-party integration and providing unified content management capabilities across server and storage systems. The MSF enables a common view into content that may be stored across multiple filesystems, and allows partner applications to manage complex workflows more easily through a single programming interface.

Based on the principles of Service Orientated Architecture (SOA), the MSF platform simplifies application interfaces, encapsulating and exposing key functionality of existing Omneon APIs and open protocols -- searching file systems, transferring files, managing metadata, and manipulating media -- while at the same time extending functionality to include additional services, including generating proxies, transcoding media, and accelerating and managing content delivery. It also provides a system database for tracking content and storing rules and metadata, and a messaging bus for ease of integration.

“As customer environments and system deployments become more complicated, we need a way to ease the integration efforts by simplifying many of the interfaces used by application developers to manage content across multiple systems,” said Geoff Stedman, Omneon vice president of marketing. “Our primary goal is to enable highly efficient file-based workflows, and the Media Services Framework provides a much more flexible, workflow-conscious and adaptable software control layer that can be tailored to individual customer applications and workflows.”

The MSF is based on open, modern IT principles and provides a public Web service API that can be used by any interested third-party application provider. Besides supporting the functionality of all Omneon products, the framework and underlying infrastructure is inherently extensible and may be enhanced and extended to provide an integration platform for any media centric workflow application or hardware system. This ensures that the MSF is also future-proof through the ability to modify the publication of these services using REST or SOAP to adhere to emerging standards.

Application partners adopting the MSF will have a single technology platform with which to integrate to Omneon and potentially other third-party systems. Products leveraging the functionality of the MSF will provide customers with more complete and more rapid integrations and an overall better user experience.

Leading software vendors who will be adopting the MSF in future workflow implementations with Omneon include: Blue Order, Crispin, Dalet, Front Porch Digital, IBIS, Masstech Group, Medit Profi, Pebble Beach Systems, Pharos Communications, Pro-Bel, Screen Subtitling Systems, Softel, Solutions for Media, Telestream, TransMedia Dynamics, and Vizrt.
