India: BBC to Train Indian Broadcaster in HD Coverage

The BCC said it plans to provide special training starting this week (Dec. 3) to about 300 staff members of Doordarshan, India's national public broadcaster, on covering various sports events in HD.

The HD technical training comes prior to the Commonwealth Games (CWG), which are scheduled to be held next October in New Delhi. Doordarshan holds sole telecast rights to the matches. The CWG telecasts will mark the first HD coverage for the event. BBC's training for the Indian broadcaster will be held at least through June 2010.

According to Doordarshan officials at a recent press briefing in Hyderabad, Doordarshan staffers will work with British engineers and producers on pilot coverage covering various sports such as boxing, wrestling and weight-lifting.

The training deal with the BBC also will entail some HD equipment purchases by the Indian broadcaster, and other technical support.
