AP Television Opens North Korean Bureau

After four years of negotiations, AP Television News has become the first western news agency to operate a full-time bureau in North Korea.

APTN executive director Nigel Baker was in Pyongyang for the bureau's opening this week and said, "This is a groundbreaking opportunity. APTN has secured frequent and prolonged access to North Korea over the past four years. The agreement for a full-time bureau now means we'll be the only Western news organization with regular coverage."

The agreement allows AP Television News, which is headquartered in the U.K., to provide international staff to work in Pyongyang with a local staff recruited from Korean Radio and Television. The news organization has four staff members in South Korea and provides content to more than 15 Korean broadcasters.
