Music industry pros form new alliance
Eight noted audio engineers and record producers have formed the Music Engineering and Technology Alliance (META) – an incorporated entity through which the group will offer consultation and advice to clients seeking their expertise. The members of META are Phil Ramone, Elliot Scheiner, Frank Filipetti, Al Schmitt, George Massenburg, Ed Cherney, Chuck Ainlay and Rory Kaplan.
The announcement was made at the Consumer Electronics Show January 6-9 in Las Vegas, which for the first time this year featured a professional audio pavilion. The company’s stated mission is to “ensure the implementation of optimum standards and practices for the highest-quality music recording and delivery achievable by uniting audio professionals, technology providers and consumer electronics manufacturers in a collaborative effort.”
Several members have run their own pro audio companies, or been executives at others, such as Kaplan, former exec at DTS, and Massenberg, principal at GML, and who also serves as META’s CTO. Others have extended their expertise well into the consumer sector, such as Scheiner, who last year consulted to Accura for the rollout of their surround-equipped auto.
META plans to implement a certification program for music technologies, as well as providing R&D services, standards consulting, education and mentoring.
