A joint venture between Time Warner Cable and Belo to bring 24-hour cable news to local viewers in Houston, San Antonio, TX, and Charlotte, NC, came to a halt July 23, when the companies announced its discontinuation.
The companies ceased operations of the channels because of competition in the three markets from other news sources.
One hundred and ninety full and part-time employees lost their jobs as a result of the closing.
The cable news channels in San Antonio and Houston ceased operations July 23. News 14 Carolina in Charlotte has continued operations as a wholly-owned unit of Time Warner Cable.
Time Warner also operates 24-hour news channels in Raleigh, NC; Austin, TX; Albany, NY; Syracuse, NY; Rochester, NY, and New York City. Its Charlotte and Raleigh News 14 Carolina operations will work together to create greater efficiencies.
Time Warner and Belo announced the joint venture in September 2000. News 14 Carolina debuted in June 2002; News 24 Houston in December 2002; and News 9 San Antonio in April 2003.
