Thales and IBM develop IP TV and VOD System for Iceland Telecom

Thales and IBM have teamed up to provide technology and systems support for Iceland Telecom, a network operator in Iceland, for the pilot launch of IP-delivered television and video-on-demand services by the end of this year. A full-scale commercial launch will follow.

The system will incorporate Thales' SmartVision broadband service platform (based on an IBM infrastructure) and IBM WebSphere middleware. It will also provide the delivery and integration of the whole service in Iceland Telecom's existing broadcast and broadband network.

The platform includes IBM's BladeCenter and x-Series technology. Iceland Telecom will also be able to add other IBM eServer modules into its BladeCenter-T configuration to run third-party software.

While Iceland Telcom is the first client, IBM and Thales have joined forces to deliver an end-to-end IPTV and VOD solution for a variety of applications.

Through this partnership, Thales and IBM will integrate small-to-large IP video systems, while ensuring scalability and support services.
