Television Jamaica (TVJ) is in the process of converting to digital and found Harris Corporation's TRuepoint microwave radios and NetVX networking platform provided a way to provide a digital backbone to stations throughout Jamaica. The equipment will allow for bidirectional networking between the TVJ "hub" in Kingston and various transmitters dispersed around Jamaica.
"Harris' integrated architecture is allowing Television Jamaica Limited to consolidate its television and radio transmission service," said Stephen Legister, director of technical strategy and development at TVJ. "As a result, we've experienced a number of key benefits to date. Most importantly, the bandwidth capacity and flexibility of the network has increased our ability to transport live encoded media from several locations around the island. Secondly, we're transmitting a television signal in a digital format from our studio to our transmitters, resulting in better picture quality for TVJ viewers."
The TRuepoint microwave system is capable of using frequencies from 6 to 38 GHz at data rates from 4 to 180 Mbps. NetVX provides connectivity between the microwave and other packet-based networks. Jayne Leighton, Harris Microwave Communications division VP of North American sales and service, said, "By incorporating the joint NetVX-TRuepoint solution, broadcasters around the globe can seamlessly upgrade their TV and radio networks to digital and operate them without the inherent limitations of traditional equipment."
