Telecast Fiber tidies up productions with HD camera switch

Looking to ease the logistics associated with congested video areas on live remote productions, Telecast Fiber Systems has introduced the new Viper II SW6031 module, which allows switching between SMPTE hybrid camera cables, triax adapters and fiber media. The new module is capable of switching among three different HD camera-cabling configurations from inside a live sports truck or studio without requiring a re-patch at an outside-access I/O panel.

The SW6031 provides complete switching control of both the optical and copper signals present on a SMPTE 911M cable. Positioned between the camera control unit (CCU) and the truck I/O panel, it gives operators unprecedented control and command of their HD cameras in the field. The integrated optical power meter and onboard status display provide instant feedback on system operation.

The integrated SHED (SMPTE Hybrid Elimination Device) permits switching to ordinary single-mode fiber cable ports on the I/O panel. In addition, integral optical repeaters in the SW6031 deliver greater optical range than can be achieved with standard camera systems, enabling increased transmission distance.

Telecast's SHED adapters allow production crews using SMPTE fiber-equipped broadcast cameras to replace hybrid optical fiber/copper cabling with low-cost single-mode fiber. This reduces the bulk and expense associated with hybrid cabling and extends the distance capabilities of the camera.

Each SHED system consists of adapters that allow communication between the camera and base station via two single-mode fibers. On the base station side, the integrated SHED device interfaces with the CCU through the SW6031. Two single-mode fibers then link to either a passive SHED (with the camera locally powered) or an HDX at, or near, the camera location, where the HDX unit allows the camera to be safely powered. Up to an additional 500m of SMPTE hybrid cable can be supported between the HDX and the camera head.
