Super Bowl XL: Denver Retailers Salivating Over Possible HD Sales

With its NFL team still one big win away from another Super Bowl, Denver and other Colorado retailers are reporting a frenzy of interest in HD and other 16:9 DTV sets and sound systems, according to The Denver Post and other state media this week.

Electronics retailers are competing head-to-head for the dollars of diehard Broncos fans who have their fingers crossed on perhaps watching not one, but two big games on their new sets -- Sunday's AFC championship game and, hopefully, the Super Bowl itself on Feb. 5.

One retailer at In-Home Theater in Denver said this week he came into work to five voicemail messages asking about HD availability and prices, in specific reference to the Broncos. (At least one message resulted in an immediate sale of a 65-inch LCD on Monday morning (Jan. 16).

Since most DTV sales are financed, some major merchants like Best Buy, Circuit City and Ultimate Electronics are offering free-finance deals for up to 36 months on certain HD sets above certain price points. Denver and other merchants in the state also enjoyed a small spike in HD sales when its NHL team, the Colorado Avalanche, found itself in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
