Spanish LPTV to Offer Local News

SALTLAKECITY: One low-power TV station in Utah’s capital city is launching a local newscast. KBTU-LP, an independent Spanish-language station owned by Bustos Media, will start doing local news June 2, according to The Salt Lake City Tribune. The half-hour newscasts will be broadcast at 5 and 9 p.m.

The station previously aired 12- to 15-minute “news capsules” over the course of the day, then took a four-month hiatus to reconsider its approach. KBTU is one of five Spanish-language TV stations in the Salt Lake City market. KPNZ-TV is a full-power independent owned by Liberman Broadcasting that runs a Spanish-language variety line-up. KUTH-TV is the local Univision affiliate; Telemundo has KEJT-LP; and Azteca America programs KSVN-CA.

KSL-TV, the local NBC affiliate, has the market-leading 10 p.m. newscast, which it’s does in hi-def. KBTU is located on Channel 23 over the air and on Comcast, but not via direct broadcast satellite.
