Network News Ticks Up in 1Q

NEW YORK: Broadcast network national news franchises experienced a bit of a ratings boost in the first quarter of 2009, while cable news nets fell off a bit.

NBC’s “Nightly News” was No. 1 with a 6.3 average household rating, compared to a 5.9 in 4Q08. (A rating point comprises one percentage point of the nation’s 114.5 million or so TV households.) ABC’s “World News Tonight” was next, with a 5.7 for the quarter, same as 4Q08. “The CBS Evening News” garnered a 4.5, up from a 4.3 in 4Q. (Story continues after Sponsored Link.)

Meanwhile, Fox News fell from a 1.7 to a 1.5; CNN from a 1.1 to a 0.8; and MSNBC from a 0.9 to a 0.6. The data charts are reproduced below.
