LCD televisions will dominate the digital TV market worldwide, claiming 75 percent of the market by 2011, according to market research firm In-Stat.
Additionally, the market share held by plasma display panel televisions will slide to 15 percent by then, the researcher forecasts.
In-Stat has completed seven end-user studies in three regions worldwide — North America, Asia and Europe, which revealed:
- U.S. consumers are showing less interest in HDTV;
- U.S. respondents most interested in HDTVs dropped from 17 percent to 13 percent;
- The number of those reporting the least interest in HDTV grew 12 percentage points in 2007 to 65 percent;
- Among international respondents, interest in HDTV is on the rise;
- Forty-four percent of respondents in France and 40 percent in South Korea say they have a strong interest in HDTVs.
Other In-Stat findings include:
- Global DTV unit shipments are expected to grow from 68 million units in 2006 to more than 144 million by 2011;
- Pricing pressure will restrict revenue growth, which is expected to grow from $71 billion in 2006 to $76.7 billion in 2011.
