Lake Charles station loses transmitter building in collapse of two towers

Two 1,600-foot television towers used by KPLC in Lake Charles, La., collapsed March 4, crushing the station’s on-site transmitter building and leaving it unusable. No one was injured by the collapse.

The accident occurred in Fenton, La. The station had recently erected one of the two towers that collapsed and was at work removing the other tower when they both fell.

Currently, KPLC is broadcasting from a temporary tower in downtown Lake Charles. According to the station’s Web site, work is underway to install a more powerful transmitter. The station also has brought in a satellite truck to restore distribution of its signal to area cable providers.

Additionally, KJEF is retransmitting KPLC to help the station in its efforts to restore service until a permanent solution can be implemented.
