Hong Kong’s Cyberport offers high-quality conversions with Alchemist

Looking to strengthen its services for worldwide digital content creation, Hong Kong's Digital Media Centre (DMC) purchased a Snell & Wilcox Alchemist Platinum, a high-end standards converter.

Dr. Krates Hing-Ngok Ng, manager for the DMC, said that by investing in new technologies like the Alchemist, they’re empowering Hong Kong’s production companies to compete and win projects anywhere on the planet that require world-class quality and low production costs.

The Alchemist Platinum, delivered in Hong Kong by Broadcast Technology Limited (BTL), can upconvert high-quality 625 material to high-resolution HD images in any country video format and standard. With it DMC is able to remaster content created in Hong Kong’s native standard of 625/50Hz SD and repurpose it for distribution in the 1080i/60Hz HD formats of Japan, Korea, and the U.S. DMC’s first client (unnamed) to use the Alchemist Platinum transferred a 35-episode, one-hour length TV series from standard-definition to 1080i HD.

The Alchemist Platinum uses phase correlation, a motion-compensation technology, to deliver superb images regardless of the output format and Snell & Wilcox is the only company offering it in North Asia.

Snell & Wilcox said the Alchemist Platinum has been approved and is being used for HD upconversion by Japan’s NHK, Discovery, in the U.S., and BBC Worldwide in the U.K.

Snell & Wilcox will exhibit its latest conversion technology in Stand 1.431 at the upcoming IBC2004 conference in September. Visit Snell & Wilcox to learn more about the full line of the company’s products.
