Walt Disney Co., including its subsidiaries ABC and ESPN, has settled a suit brought by OpenTV Corp. and agreed to license patents to use the Internet to supplement its television broadcasts. The companies did not reveal financial terms of the deal.
The patents in the suit relate to systems and methods for synchronizing Internet content with television programming, enabling television viewers to receive content pertaining to a broadcast program through the Internet.
As part of the settlement, OpenTV has granted Disney a non-exclusive, royalty-bearing license to use and exploit the patents in the suit. All of the licenses are nonexclusive. OpenTV's unit, ACTV, holds the patents.
