The Canadian government issued its first DTV license this week to Toronto-based Citytv, the country's largest independent broadcast station. The station, owned by CHUM, one of Canada's largest media companies, began HDTV broadcasts with the airing of "Mission Impossible 2" in HD on Jan. 16.
To launch its digital broadcasts Citytv is using Tandberg's E5821 HD encoders to digitize and compress the signals. The encoders feed the signals through a TT6120 MediaLink transport stream processer, which converts the ASI interface to SMPTE 310 just before they are sent to the transmitter.
