NAB Has Lots of Members and a Really Big Shew

The NAB said this week that it reached an all-time high for TV station membership, which now stands at 1,170. The previous peak was reached in February 2001, when NAB had 1,166 stations on the rolls.

The news comes as the broadcast lobby prepares for its blockbuster spring trade show in Las Vegas. Content will be highlighted at this year’s event, as opposed to the usual gear- and format-centric agendas of the past. The show’s new tagline: “Where Content Comes to Life.”

NAB2008 will feature “a content theater, two pavilions dedicated to IPTV and mobile solutions and a commerce area to facilitate content partnership opportunities,” according to the NAB. Focusing on content future-proofs the show in a world of constantly shifting distribution platforms, e.g., mobile, IPTV, satellite, etc.

Building on futurism, NAB booked Alvin Toffler, author of the best-selling tome, “Future Shock,” which in 1970 described how evolving information technologies would change the global economy. Toffler will be a featured speaker at the show, held April 11-17 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
